The Power of Love: A Note of Thanks and Support

Hi Everyone,

I just want to say thanks and it has been interesting sharing thoughts, feelings, and some past childhood experiences with all.   This course has allowed me to get an idea of what someone else’s early childhood journey has been and understand what influences, whether from the community, school, or parent(s) shaped them into what they are today.

Master's in Early Childhood: THANKS AND GOODBYE UNTIL WE COLLOBRATE AGAIN!

Hi Tanya,
It has been a joy collaborating with you in your blogs.  I feel that I you are on your way to becoming successful in the early childhood field. You are a young colleague that has a great head on your shoulders and have made an outstanding contribution to the course. As you pursue your professional goals it is a good idea to refer to this quote “Children love and want to be loved and they very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph of hateful failure. Do not mistake a child for his symptom (www.goodreads.com).
-Erik Erikson“very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph

M.S. Early Childhood Studies Blog: Code of Ethics

Hi Angelika,
Your blog is one that I can agree upon.  I am strong about ethics and agree that we shall respect and honor the rights, knowledge, and skills, special contributions to children, families, and the early childhood special education.  And honor the multicultural view of colleagues or co-workers, and support new administrators in early childhood education by proving mentoring services based on ethics and evidence.
And it is a good idea to demonstrate high standards of personal integrity, sincerity, and honesty in all our professional activities.  To gain the trust and confidence of children and their families and those with whom we work. I am big on integrity as well, without it, we cannot build a solid foundation for improvement or change

Examining Codes of Ethics
My son was assessed by elementary school personnel and diagnosed with autism and placed on an intervention Individual Education Plan known as (IEP) plan at the early stage.  As a result of this assessment, school staff and ourselves were able to his guide and track his progress through high the remaining elementary, the next middle school years, and high school. The administration and ourselves held Admission Review and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings to discuss and proposed a plan and implement a program service tailored to meet his specific needs and development.  Therefore as an education administrator, it is important for me just like my own child to utilize this approach when there is a need to make an assessment on a child which and give him/her a greater opportunity for success.  This can be achieved by understanding their development, learning style, developing a plan and support its instruction, and identifying those who may require additional services (NAEYC, 2005).
School psychologist as a result of observation, and recording, gathered qualitative and quantitative information and recognized his learning difference.  They reported their finding to us which were his and special abilities, qualities, and potential for learning and developing.  As an education administrator, it is important for me to utilize this approach to understand like my own personal experience the child’s environment, recognize and respect parent’s wishes and potential that each child (NAEYC, 2005).

As a school administrator, it is important to will always a good idea to not disrespect a child’s dignity like in my own personal experience we were able to keep our dignity and our preferences for our child. They made an effort to visit our home but we declined to understand our culture, customs, structure, language and beliefs.  I will require the same conduct as an administrator (NAEYC, 2005).

As an education leader, it is important to use ethical behavior and follow the law requires that information about children is kept securely, between those who are qualified along with any information on individuals that participated in the research. The school administrator that made the assessment on my child was very careful and secure in how they delivered his information to those who were qualified to know. And they did not release members of the planning, implementing, and research groups (DEC,2009).
Currently I am a substitute teacher at a Hispanic heavy school district as well as other cultures.  I am placed in a position that calls for me to carry out my duties with respect to diversity and appreciate each family’s languages, culture, beliefs, values, and customs.  I fell that it is important to remain objective and educate and support them regardless of how they are nurtured so that they are able to work toward achieving outcomes and priorities that are important to them and their families (DEC,2009).

As an education leader, I find it critical to recognize and respect the dignity, diversity, and autonomy of the families and children we serve.  Because form my own personal experience as a substitute teacher I am in a position to allow some autonomy to other cultures and recognize and respect their diversity and dignity.  For example, at our school we are having Hispanic month and there was a program that the children were performing, as the program ended, we all congratulating them on their performance with applauses and cheering. This is important to me because it shows appreciation and respect for another culture and their preference of enjoyment and entertainment (DEC,2009).

Living a Dream: Words of Inspiration & Motivation

Hi Kiendra,
The quote that Renatta made was great.  She was right on base with the fact that adults or teachers and administrators must remove themselves form the picture and think about the child.
I chose to write on Friedrich Froebel  and Erick Erikson.  Erick Erikson was the first to introduce the Psycho social Theory which covers a child's maturation progress from birth to teen-hood and adulthood.  He points out that children go through changes in each stage.
Sincerely,
Vinston

Growing Hand in Hand: Words of Inspiration and Motivation

Hi Diana,
I enjoyed the quotes on early childhood education.  The contributors from the early days of education made a large impact. their contributions are still relevant today.  Like in the case of the two that I chose to write on. They were Friedrich Froebel and Erick Erikson.  Friedrich, was the first man to start kindergarten in a children's garden donated by some parents of children that he was teaching.

Erick Erikson was concerned with the human development from child to adult. he introduced the Phycsocial Theory.
Sincerly,
Vinston

Quotes from two major Contributors to Early Childhood Education
“Children are like tiny flowers; they are varied and need care, but each is beautiful alone and glorious when seen in the community of peers,” and “because learning begins when consciousness erupts, education must also” and “self-activity”. (“Pioneers In Our Field,” 2000).   - Friedrich’s Froebel
Second Erikson’s quotes “ Children love and want to be loved and they very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph of hateful failure. Do not mistake a child for his symptom” ( www.goodreads.com).
-Erick Erikson
“Someday, maybe, there will exist a well-informed, well considered and yet fervent public conviction that the most deadly of all possible sins is the mutilation of a child’s spirit; for such mutilation undercuts the life principle of trust, without which every human act, may it feel ever so good and seem ever so right is prone to perversion by destructive forms of conscientiousness.” (www.goodreads.com).
-Erick Erikson
Passion
“I had a built in passion that it was important to make a real contribution to the world and to fix all the injustices that existed in the world and I wanted to do that through teaching”
“Children are still trying to figure out all their different identities and they’re also trying to figure out who others are and are still bombarded with both negative and positive messages about who they are.”
-Louise Derman-Sparks
Motivation
“When I go to these parents’ meetings and actually see parents learning how to speak to policy makers, learning how to write letters, learning how to tell their stories and share their voice that’s what keeps me motivated regardless of the challenges going on”
- Sandy Escobido
Wisdom
“ It’s not all about you you’ve got to take your ego out and think about this child”.
- Renatta Cooper

A teacher is always learning: Introductions

Hi Celeste,
I am also from a small town. My mother Mary  passed away 2006.  She worked as an elementary school teacher and she was natural caregiver. I think you have a great mom. She time for us and carried me to work on not many occasions.

Growing Hand in Hand: Personal Childhood Web

Hi Diana,
My mother Mary was single mother and we also grew up outside of town. We had some pear, fig, and plum trees next to our house.  My mother was a natural care giver. She took care of some sick people and both young and old and kept my sisters children during the summer break form school.

My father was a bachelor who lived on a farm and farmed all of his life. he had horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, and sold milk for the diary market.

Personal Childhood Web

The individuals that had a great impact on my childhood include: Mary Boyd, Francis Williams, Anliza Williams, Bonnie Collier, Odell Collier, and Naomi Lindsey.  These ensured that I was loved, provided for and cared for.

My mother Mary was a elementary school teacher who was a single mother that worked each day to ensure that we were provided for, cared for and loved. She stressed the importance of getting an education. Francis and Anliza were associated of my mother that served as a baby sitter for me in the early years. They provided me with a warm fireplace and a quilt and a meal for the day. Bonnie is an aunt who served as a temporary in home care who helped when we got burned out of our home. She cooked meals, and provided a place to sleep. Odell was the husband of Bonnie who treated me like a son. He served as a family man who helped at the time our home burned by working to provide a place for me and my sister. Naomi acted as a babysitter as well.  She offered conversation on what issue that I may have been having.

Today their influence had a great impact on my life. I am find it critical to love and care for each other in times of need or unfortunate circumstances. I find it important to get an education. I find it critical to work and take care of my family. I find it critical to offer a warm fireplace and a quilt to any of my relatives that may be in a position of need. I find it critical to provide meals, a bed, and conversation on possible issues.
Some important things that my mother said that I remember is "to always care for one another under any circumstances", "never steal", and "avoid bad characters".

I am sorry that I have no pictures to post.  This was in the early 60s when I was in the early years.

All Things Early Childhood Education: Favorite Children's Book

Hi Bianco,
This is a good book. It has valuable lessons in it.  The little engine that could is my children's favorite short film which illustrates that they are able to accomplish anything if they keep to it.
Sincerely,
Vinston

I chose this image because it is interesting to study how the autistic brain functions and its structure. This article covers studies of the autistic brain.  It places emphases on brain research and that this research may hold significant clues to possible causes and treatments for autism.  It mentions the fact that the cause of autism is still a puzzle although many studies point toward possible connection between brain structure and autism (autism.lovetoKnow.com).

"When you have a child with special needs, you learn to live with a lot of stress and you throw yourself into your everyday job as a parent; if you work outside the home, you work even harder - and you don't think much about taking care of yourself" ( www.autism.about.com).

This particular quote came from a parent with autism evidently they have learned to live with the diagnosis.
My spouse and I have a child with autism and can relate to this quote.
